CLE Requirements: The Virginia State Bar requires attorneys to complete 12 credits, including 2 ethics credits, by October 31 every year. All credits must be reported by December 15. Attorneys are limited to 8 credits of pre-recorded programs per compliance period. Attorneys are required to fulfill a minimum of 4 credits via live programs. A maximum of 12 credits may be carried over to the next compliance period, only 8 of which (including 2 ethics) may come from pre-recorded programs. For additional information, please see the FAQ page on the Virginia State Bar website. Beginning November 1, 2019, each active member of the Virginia State Bar shall certify whether they have attended, within the past three years, at least one credit hour of lawyer well-being education related to the practice of law. Failure to comply with this rule shall not subject the member to the penalties of Paragraph 13.2 of these rules. Detailed Virginia MCLE Requirements

What are the general Virginia CLE rules?

12 hours total of CLE must be completed annually by October 31 and then reported by December 15 of each year.

Specialty Credits

Four Virginia CLE hours must be live-interactive. Live-interactive means that must they involve real-time interaction with an instructor and/or other participants. This can include live in-person seminars, live online webcasts, or telephone seminars/courses.

Two hours of your Virginia CLE courses must be legal ethics.

Course Approval

Courses must be approved by the Virginia Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Board. All MCLEZ.COM courses are fully approved.

What are the Virginia CLE Reporting Dates?

All attorneys must complete their annual 12 hours of CLE credit by October 31st of each year. Any course completion certificates must state that course has completed before midnight October 31st.

All earned Virginia CLE credits must be reported to the Virginia State Bar by December 15th of the same year that they were completed. You must enter the credits earned via the online reporting system or by submitting your MCLE Form 1.

Failure to report your credits by December 15th may incur late fees and potential non-compliance penalties. The Virginia Bar may audit your compliance submissions.

What are the Virginia CLE Exemptions/Exceptions Rules?

Virginia attorneys newly admitted to practice law in the state of Virginia during the current reporting period are exempt from the Virginia CLE requirements.

The date on which you are admitted is defined to be the date on which your law license was issued, not the date on which you were sworn in.



What are the Virginia CLE Carry Over Rules?

A maximum of 12 excess credit hours, including 2 ethics credits, can be carried over to the next reporting period. Only 8 excess credit hours earned from on-demand courses can be carried over to the next reporting period.
